Poll Shows Democrat Justin Nelson With Clear Path to Victory in Texas Attorney General Race

A poll released today shows Democrat Justin Nelson leading indicted incumbent Attorney General Ken Paxton once voters learn about Paxton’s indictments for criminal fraud.

“When Texans hear about the differences between Ken Paxton and myself, we will win. Paxton has been charged by a Republican District Attorney for defrauding his friends and clients. The Attorney General is the top law enforcement office in Texas. Texans want an Attorney General who will enforce the law, not violate it. We can do better than Ken Paxton as our Attorney General, and Texans know it.”

Justin Nelson

The poll conducted for Nelson shows he can win. In fact, the poll shows Nelson leads Paxton after voters hear about both candidates.

The poll of likely Texas voters was conducted in October, before the Democratic victories in Alabama and Virginia. In the poll, Paxton starts with an unimpressive 30% favorable and 29% unfavorable rating. When voters are informed about Paxton’s corrupt behavior and indictment, 62% say it raises serious doubts about him.

After voters hear about both candidates, the poll shows Nelson slightly ahead of Paxton by a margin of 47%-46%.

Given events over the last six weeks nationally and in Texas, the poll may well underestimate Nelson’s support.

The attached polling memo provides more details about the poll.
